Volunteers play an important role in the operations of the New-York Historical Society. Volunteers work in a variety of departments including Education, Public Programs, Museum, Library and Development. We seek a diverse group of volunteers who can apply their skills, interests and experiences to a wide range of short-term and project-specific assignments. Long-term and on-going assignments are also available. To inquire about volunteering, send an e-mail to volunteers@nyhistory.org indicating your area of interest and attach your resume. If your skills and qualifications match our needs we will contact you; if not, we will keep your information on file and contact you if an appropriate position becomes available. Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the New-York Historical Society.

Volunteer Greeters

Description

The New-York Historical Society is currently looking for Museum Greeters. The greeters will welcome visitors, distribute printed information, educate visitors on our exhibitions and the history of the New-York Historical Society as well as help visitors navigate our newly renovated building.

If you love American history and enjoy interacting with people this could be a great fit for you. While New-York Historical's docent program trains volunteers to give guided tours of the permanent collection, the greeters are stationed throughout the building focusing more on the history of the New-York Historical Society, our building and the variety of exhibitions and public programs we offer. New-York Historical's recent strategic plan stresses that the visitor experience should be "palpable at the moment of entry" and "maximize exposure to the breadth and meaning of the New-York Historical Society's collections." We hope the volunteer greeters will help us accomplish this goal.

Requirements

We will be reopening on November 11, 2011 after a three year renovation. Your training will begin in October.

Typical shifts are four hours and volunteers are actively engaging visitors throughout the building.

We are looking for weekly commitments of four hours, Tuesday through Friday. For weekends it can be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.
