The subject was the eldest son of Edward Renshaw Jones and Elizabeth (Schermerhorn) Jones of New York. He received his A.B. from Columbia College in 1830 and his M.D. in 1834, and he served as trustee of that institution from 1849 to 1869. His portrait was a gift to the New-York Historical Society from his granddaughter.
