The subject is best known as the man who accomplished the laying of the first Atlantic cable. A cable laid in 1858 was not completely successful, although Queen Victoria and President Buchanan were able to use it to exchange messages. Another laid in 1866 was a spectacular success and brought Field acclaim in both Europe and America. This portrait, which Lay based on an original by Daniel Huntington, was a gift to the Society from the artist's son.
