Family Program
Little New-Yorkers

Every Tuesday and Friday. Free with Museum Admission. Ages 3-5.  

Each class includes time with historic toys, a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, story readings, and a related craft project.

Little New-Yorkers in December and January

December 9 and 12: Rush Hour by Christine Loomis. This week we’re exploring the different ways that people travel around the city, from historical modes of transport to modern day wonders. Children will then make their own paper boat.

December 16 and 19: 12 Days of New York by Tonya Bolden
This week we’re getting into the festive spirit with this twist on an old classic. We’ll count down the wonders of New York while travelling through the city in various types of transport. Children will then make little clothes-peg airplanes.

December 23: My Taxi Ride by Paul Dubois Jacobs and Jennifer Swender. There are many ways to travel around the city, but this week we’re celebrating the one and only yellow taxi in this fast paced rhyming book. Children will then make a flying taxi.

January 6 and 9: Cornelia Van Varick
This week we’re meeting one of the characters from the Dimenna Children’s History Museum. Taking a closer look at little Cornelia, we’ll explore her daily life and go on a magical journey with her. Children will then make a paper woven Turkish carpet.

January 13 and 16: Indian Mythology
This week we’re travelling to far off lands for this story from India, to learn about Tansen the great music magician. Children will then make their own decorated Indian elephant.

January 20 and 23: Greek Mythology
This week we continue our far-flung adventures, this time to Europe. We’ll hear the story of the Greek god Helios and learn about his connection to the sun. Children will then make a paper sun chariot.

January 27 and 30: Chinese New Year Zodiac Story
This year is will be the year of the goat, we’ll find out how the animals came to be in this order with the Zodiac story. Children will then make their own fortune cookie.
