Recommended for all ages

We’re commemorating the 100th anniversary of America’s official entry into the First World War by bringing New York in 1917 to life! Every Saturday and on select Sundays this summer , stop by the Museum to meet different personalities from the home- and war-fronts of the United States a century ago. Each week is different—you might discover the uniforms of army doughboys, run into a famous leader, or march with suffragists!

On select Saturdays, deepen your immersion into our new exhibition, World War I Beyond the Trenchesby meeting U.S. soldiers from the American Expeditionary Forces, also known as the AEF. Portrayed by Living Historians, the troops will share stories about early 20th-century life on and off the battlefield. Try on an army helmet, or ‘tin hat,’ on your own head, dig into military tools and equipment, and inspect the soldiers’ uniforms from the top of their hooked wool collars all the way down to their special leggings for time in the trenches.
