We’re celebrating Presidents’ Day over School Vacation Week! Join us on the weekends to meet the founders who became our nation’s five first presidents and first ladies.

On Saturday, February 25, meet the fifth president, James Monroe! After the War of 1812, Monroe was determined to strengthen the U.S. and defend it. Ask our fourth commander-in-chief about his presidency’s most crucial events, like the Monroe Doctrine or the Missouri Compromise of 1820. You’ll also meet citizens from Monroe’s time period, portrayed by living historians from the W.S. Hancock Society, and learn about everyday life during the ‘era of good feelings’ that Monroe helped create. Plus, try out life during the 1820s: use chalkboard slates and other school house utensils, weigh currency with a scale, or examine common household items like lamps and foot warmers.

About the Living Historian
Dennis Bigelow is the costumed interpreter at Monroe’s home, Ash Lawn-Highland. He is also a history teacher and communications specialist who has served as a U.S. Marine officer, was a spokesperson for USA Today, and is an ancestral nephew of Chief Justice John Marshall, a life-long friend of Monroe’s.
