Citizenship Education Fellow

JOB TITLE: Citizenship Education Fellow – One year position
DEPARTMENT: Education
REPORTS TO: Associate Director for Professional Learning     

JOB SUMMARY:  The New-York Historical Society is seeking an accomplished educator with a background in United States History and Government to develop and lead a program for legal Green Card holders interested in applying for United States citizenship. The successful candidate should be familiar with the inquiry-based teaching and learning and will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop and implement a curriculum designed to prepare applicants to pass the Civics portion of the USCIS Citizenship exam using the extensive collections of the New-York Historical Society
  • Organize a schedule of workshops both on site at the museum and in partnership with organizations across the New York metropolitan area
  • Train and supervise a group of Educators to lead the programs
  • Train and manage a cadre of volunteers to serve as assistant educators

EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s degree in United States History and Government or in History Education. Master’s Degree in American History or History Education preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three years’ experience working as a teacher of history in an educational setting.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Develop and implement a curriculum designed to prepare applicants to pass the Civics portion of the Citizenship exam that makes use of the extensive collections and existing education programming of the New-York Historical Society
  • Organize a schedule of workshops both on site at the museum and in partnership with organizations across the New York metropolitan area
  • Train and supervise  a group of Educators to lead the programs
  • Train and manage a cadre of volunteers to serve as assistant educators
  • Speak to community leaders in various venues to introduce and promote the program widely
  • Manage all program logistics and administration
  • Perform additional duties as requested.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

This position will require the employee to lift, bend, stoop, walk, speak and stand for up to 7 hours in a day.  Sedentary computer work is also required.
