JOB TITLE: Director of Individual Giving
DEPARTMENT: Development
REPORTS TO: Vice President for Development

JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Individual Giving is responsible for leading the Society’s annual individual giving program, with the goal of increasing donations and providing stewardship and engagement opportunities for current and potential donors.  The Director of Individual Giving is also responsible for leading New-York Historical’s membership program, with the goals of expanding the membership roster, further increasing revenue through continuous upgrades, and providing excellent stewardship in order to ensure rising renewal rates.

EDUCATION: BA or equivalent

EXPERIENCE:

  • 5- 7 years’ experience in Individual Giving with management experience preferred
  • Experience with direct cultivation and solicitation of individual prospects and donors
  • Experience with managing prospect research and donor stewardship
  • Experience with managing a “moves management” style prospect pipeline process
  • Experience overseeing donor events of various sizes and formats
  • Experience managing a large and dynamic membership program
  • Experience overseeing annual fund mailing appeals
  • Excellent database skills
  • Experience managing staff
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
This individual works closely with the Vice President for Development and other key development and museum staff to coordinate efforts that will lead to increased support for N-YHS. She or he will be responsible for meeting the organization’s Individual Giving revenue goal for each year ($2.066 million in FY18). He or she will actively and enthusiastically seek opportunities to meet and cultivate relationships with donors at all levels, and proactively suggest strategies for advancing these relationships in terms of both donor groups and specific individuals. In addition, the Director of Individual Giving is responsible for meeting the organization’s annual Membership revenue goal ($1.28 million in FY18).

Specific duties include the following:

Major Giving

  • Oversee the process of identifying and researching prospective major donors for operations (including exhibitions, education programs, and other projects), future projects, and capital/endowment campaigns.
  • Develop and manage her/his own portfolio of major donor prospects, with the goal of making direct solicitations or arranging for solicitations by other staff/trustees.
  • Oversee a moves management tracking process for all individual prospects.
  • Prepare the Vice President for Development, President & CEO, and trustees for major gift meetings.
  • Oversee the management and expansion of the Women’s History Council, Frederick Douglass Council, and any similar councils that might be launched.
  • Assist with the management of the 1804 League and other Planned Giving efforts.

Donor Relations & Stewardship

  • Manage a comprehensive stewardship program for all non-Chairman’s Council individual donors to N-YHS with the goal of increasing donor participation, reengagement, and giving in support of N-YHS fundraising efforts.
  • Assist the Vice President for Development and General Counsel in establishing objectives, strategies, and relationship building for the Planned Giving Program.

Membership

  • Develop and implement annual fundraising strategies including renewal, acquisition, and upgrade campaigns for the general membership program (members contributing $85-$2,500/approximately 9,000 households).
  • Focus particular attention on the Benefactor and Gotham Fellow levels to maximize retention, upgrades, and new acquisitions at those levels.
  • Manage messaging to current and prospective members across multiple communication platforms.
  • Make data driven decisions regarding acquisition/retention techniques and cultivation strategies.
  • Devise and execute membership cultivation and stewardship events and other activities for the purpose of both general retention and membership upgrades.
  • Devise and execute promotional strategies to acquire new members and re-enlist lapsed members.
  • Work with the Marketing and Communications department to produce printed brochures and other materials.
  • Monitor the success of various levels of membership and suggest adjustments to dues levels, benefits, etc.

Events

  • Help oversee the planning and successful execution of the summer Members Breakfast
  • Help oversee the planning and successful execution of the fall Thanksgiving Eve Family Celebration.
  • Help oversee the planning and successful execution of any other membership events that may be established.

Annual Appeal

  • Manage the winter and spring annual fund appeals.
  • Create strategies to grow the annual giving program.

Additional duties as requested.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

This is largely a sedentary role using a computer; however, some filing is required.  This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stoop as necessary.
