Abraham De Peyster, the son of James A. and Sarah (Reade) De Peyster, was a captain in the Fourth, or King's Regiment, during the Revolution. After the war he went to St. John, New Brunswick, as a grantee, and eventually became treasurer of the province. In this portrait, which is copied from an original of ca. 1785-90, the subject appears in the uniform he wore as an officer in the service of King George III. The portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaughter.
