The subject was the third son of Abraham and Margaret (Field) Van Nest and a descendant of Peter Pieterse Van Nest who immigrated to New Amsterdam from Utrecht, Holland, in 1647. Abraham Van Nest, Jr., was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department of New York. His portrait was a gift to the Society from the estate of his grandniece.
