After Columbus returned from his voyage in 1492, claiming discovery of a western route to Asia, Vespucci made several trips to the New World--between 1497 and 1503--during which he explored and made maps of several regions of South America. His name was first applied to the southern continent by Martin Waldseemüller in "Cosmographic Introductio," published in 1507.
