This shows Commodore Thomas Macdonough's victory over the British fleet commanded by Captain George Downie in Plattsburgh Bay on Lake Champlain on September 11, 1814. This study is attributed to Reinagle as a sketch for his larger painting of the battle which was engraved and published in Philadelphia by Benjamin Tanner (1775-1848) on July 4, 1816. A copy of the engraving is in the Olds collection (no. 298) in the Society's Print Room.
