Rectangular wooden box and lid (attached with two woven hinges) covered in paper, lid covered with paper lithographed with scene of woman filling urn at fountain and French soldier sitting on edge of fountain holding rifle with dog at his feet, in black, blue, red, and yellow; scene overlaid with second layer of paper pasted onto lid, lithographed with decorative border of grape vine in black, with center oval cut out to frame scene at fountain; edge of lid and sides of box covered in paper block printed with geometric pattern consisting of vertical panels filled with leaf and other motifs in blue and white; inside covered with plain paper; staples used to reinforce construction.

According to accession records, this box belonged to Luther Vail, great-grandfather of the donor. Mr. Vail lived in Middletown and then moved to Romulus, New York.
