Cardboard box hand addressed to "Mr. Herbert L. Satterlee/ 49 Wall Street/ New York City" from "Mme./ Townsend Tagliapietra/ Hotel Gramercy" enclosing handwritten note: "Graded magnifying glass set, of three, in constant use by Commodore John D. Sloat - Commander-In-Chief of the United States Squadron Pacific Coast - Flag-Ship "Savannah", 1840, when with the aid of Gen'l John C. Fremont's land force, he took possession of Monterey against the double forces of English & Mexicans".
