A California sense of light in crowded New York City Streets enhances and highlights the vibrant colors and constant motion that suggest a sense of urban sound emanating from Tom Christopher's canvases. His paintings offer glimpses of people - businessmen, tourists, kids, orange-suited workers - engaged in quotidian activities - running or cycling through dense traffic; sweeping the street; roller blading. Figures are presented -- a torso portion of some, the elbow or shoulder of another, adding to the sense of fleeting urban encounters and the daily New York experience of jam-packed spaces. The patterns formed by familiar street elements - cabs and trucks, light posts and fire hydrants, buildings and their signs - become part of this pressured, exciting metropolitan scene.
