2001.32
Date:
1987
Medium:
Oil on canvas
Dimensions:
Overall: 20 x 36 in. ( 50.8 x 91.4 cm )
Description:
In a public wash room, several men, some without shirts, are washing and grooming themselves, while one on the right is using a urinal. The tired yellow paint of the walls and the cold light of the overhead flourescent lights make clear that this is not one of the City's upscale precincts.
Gallery Label:
With a straightforward look at the way these homeless men solve the basic problem of personal cleanliness, Reisman documents one of the most persistent problems in New York City. The painting stands in stark contrast to 19th century genre paintings, which frequently portrayed poverty in romaticized, sentimental ways.
