In 1967 Senator Eugene J. McCarthy challenged Lyndon B. Johnson during the Democratic primaries. When Johnson decided not to run for re-election Vice-President Hubert Humphrey took his place. However, Democrats lost the Presidency to Republican Gerald Ford.
