Richard M. Nixon became the 37th President of the United States in 1969 and was re-elected in 1972. He resigned his Presidency due to the Watergate scandal, in which he allowed the break-in and electronic bugging of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate apartment and office building complex.
