Rectangular yellow and blue piin-back button; blue cartoon face with blue text balloon on yellow ground; reads "Hey Brooklyn!! / Remember / To Recycle!"; below in blue text: "Howard Golden, President of Brooklyn / NYC Department of Sanitation, BWPRR." On rim: Weisenbach Specialty Printing 614-464-2223 Voluntary recycling began in New York City in 1989, but was phased in gradually. By 1997 it had been extended to the entire city. The Weisenbach company of Ohio, founded in 1981, specializes in “environmentally preferable” promotional materials. Howard Golden (b. 1925) was Brooklyn Borough President from 1977 -2001. The Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling is part of the City Sanitation Department.
