The subject of this portrait was the son of David and Ann (Willett) Colden and the grandson of Cadwallader Colden. Cadwallader D. Colden was major of New York from 1818 to 1820, and in 1821 was elected a vice-president of The New-York Historical Society. Colden was also a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1821-23) and served in the New York State Senate (1825-27).
