Description: 
Gray felt campaign hat with deep center depression in crown and wide, soft brim; silk ribbon band of matching color; pinpoint ventilation holes punched in the shape of a star (one on either side); gilded metal insignia with crossed sabers below number "1" and above letter "D" pinned to front; leather sweatband and chin cord.

The insignia attached to this hat is that of Troop D, 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry (Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders). According to the accession records, the hat was made by United Hatters of North America.
