Born in Ripon, Wisc., Carrie Lane graduated from the State College of Iowa and eventually became superintendent of schools in Mason City, Iowa. In 1884 she married to Leo Chapman, who died two years later; she became the wife of George William Catt in 1890. As Carrie Chapman Catt, she served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Assn. from 1900 to 1904 and from 1915 until her death. She also founded the National League of Woman Voters, of which she was honorary president.
