The subject, a native of New York, was, by the age of eighteen, a photographer in Frank Leslie's "Gallery," where photographic portraits of eminent men were transformed into wood-engravings. He experimented continually in the following years until he invented the zinc etching technique, which revolutionized photographic reproduction. Many of his pioneering etchings were presented to the Society by his son, the artist, who also donated this portrait.
