Born in Lowell, Mass., Charles Stedman Hanks was educated at Harvard and graduated from the Boston Law School in 1881. He went late in his life to several European countries to study the rates of their railroads, and on this trip he visited Italy. This miniature, a gift to the Society from his son, was probably painted at that time.
