Pierced medallion cipher, "C A B" engraved with foliate ornament.
Description: 
Black velvet purse with silver chatelaine suspended from two chains on either side of the hinged snap fastener. Chatelaine and snap fastener worked in relief floral design with scrolled outer edges; silver cipher medallion at the center of one side; interio lined in chamois and divided into two compartments.

This chatelaine purse belonged to Cornelia Augustus Beekman (1849-1917), daughter of James William Beekman, Sr., and Abian Steele (Milledoler) Beekman. She and her two brothers never married, residing together in their homes in Manhattan and Long Island. She served as mistress of the household, and acted as hostess to the numerous Beekman social events.
