Lexow was born in Brooklyn and graduated from Columbia University Law School in 1872. He was elected to the New York State Senate in 1893, and was chairman of the joint legislative committee which in 1898 worked out the consolidation of Manhattan and four other boroughs into greater New York. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his son.
