Commodore Edward Preble (1761-1807), who commanded the American fleet during the Barbary Wars in the Mediterranean, was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal by an 1805 Resolution of the United States Congress, in honor of his skill and bravery onboard the U.S.S. Constitution in the battle off Tripoli in 1804.
