Description: 
Cast brass type M, non-automatic multiple unit train controller handle with a molded circular boss or water cap with a square hole socket at on end and a turned wooden grip with a wooden "dead-man" button on the top of the grip; button attached to a spring on the inside of the handle; rectangular pointer cast on the underside of the handle.

This controller handle was used to operate railway cars on the IRT Third Avenue Line, commonly known as the Third Avenue El. The first segments of the line opened in Manhattan in 1878; service in Manhattan was discontinued in 1955 and the Bronx in 1973.
