The original of Couture's Prodigal Son no longer exists, but was probably in the Musee des Beaux Arts in Le Havre, France when Beckwith saw it.

Inscribed in graphite in sketchbook, below drawing: "The original of ths painting / was owned by G.P.A. Healy and was / loaned to the Chicago HIstorical Society / when it was burned Oct 9th 1871"
