Fitted cotton corset with square neckline; upper hip length; quilted gussets, pleated cups; band with geometric quilting pattern at higher than natural waistline; eleven ivory grommets (eyes) on each side of the back closure (ties not extant); handstitched.
The maker of this handmade corset was the grandmother of the donor. With its low square neckline and gusseted brassiere, the corset mirrors the necklines and tight-fitting bodices fashionable in the first half of the nineteenth century. Its repairs and stains reflect the corset's long history and importance in a woman's wardrobe, as even plain undergarments were much coveted textiles in the nineteenth century.
