A native of Glasgow, Scotland, the subject immigrated to New York in 1842. In May 1861 he was commissioned captain of company E of the 79th (New York Highland) Regiment; he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in January 1862 and to colonel in February 1863. He was breveted brigadier general in March 1865 for his "gallant and meritorious conduct" near Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia, in which action he was wounded.
