Aluminum struck medal with obverse showing clothed bust of Ulysses Grant facing right with dates beneath, at center: "1822-1885"; legend: "IN MEMORIAM/U.S. GRANT/SOLDIER-PRESIDENT-CITIZEN/THOUGH TO EARTH NO MORE . IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER." Reverse shows image of Grant on horseback, at center, with Union soldier on horseback at left, holding standard; field in background with group of farmers in distance at right; legend: "FORT DONELSON 1862 . VICKSBURG 1863 . RICHMOND 1865 . / PRESIDENT 1869-1877." Medal set into square white cardboard box.
