After receiving a Ph.D. in physics from Yale in 1925, Lawrence joined the staff of the physics department there. In 1931, when only thirty years old, he invented the cyclotron, the device that permitted the study of the structure and behavior of the atom. In 1936 he was appointed director of the radiation laboratory at the University of California and in 1939 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.
