Langmuir, a chemist and atomic scientist, was born in Brooklyn and received his A.B. degree from Columbia College in 1903. He was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of Göttingen in 1909 and thereafter joined the research staff of General Electric Co. in Schenectady, New York. In 1932 he was made director of the research laboratory there, and in the same year was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
