A native of Kiev, Russia, the subject came to the United States in 1910 and earned a Ph.D. from the University of California in 1918. Thereafter he began research in microbiology and joined the faculty of Rutgers University where he remained for nearly forty years. He received the Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology in 1952. The discovery of the drug streptomycin was one of his achievements.
