Description: 
Black leather dragoon helmet with high domed crown of two-piece construction and wide rounded visor; red wool band held in place by wire-wrapped cord looped zigzag-fashion over a series a flat metal buttons (originally 3 on each side); gilded metal insignia plate with eagle perched above oval shield embossed with bugle (not original); quilted linen half-lining with drawstring closure.

According to military expert William L. Brown, the insignia plate attached to this helmet was made in France ca. 1861 for the U.S. Army.
