Description 
Dress hat with soft, oval, dark blue wool felt crown, and visor with sequined oak leaf sprays embroidered in gold on black felt ground; embroidered front insignia consisting of a shield over crossed anchors with eagle with outstretched wings above; chin strap made of gold metallic cloth tape secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with an eagle perched on an anchor; brown leather sweatband and black textile lining.

Gallery Label 
According to the accession records, this hat belonged to George Elmore Ide, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1861 to 1901. The donor was apparently his daughter-in-law. Her husband, John Jay Ide (d. 1962), was a great-great grandson of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States.
