Edward Harkness inherited an enormous fortune from his father, Stephen V. Harkness (1818-88), one of the six original shareholders of Standard Oil and a partner of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. He also received large bequests upon the death of his mother, Anna (Richardson) Harkness, and his older brother, Charles W. Harkness. Thereafter his life was devoted to philanthropy; among the beneficiaries of his generosity were the New York Public Library, the Pilgrim Trust and Phillips Exeter Academy, N. H.
