The subject was the second of ten children of Norman White (1805-83) and Mary Abiah (Dodge) White (1808-57). Her older sister, Mary Stuart White (see Mrs. Matson Meier-Smith) was the donor's grandmother. The subject's father was a prominent New York businessman with homes in Gramercy Park and New Rochelle, New York.
