Oil on canvas
Overall: 24 x 16 in. ( 61 x 40.6 cm )
With an early morning view of Manhattan in the background, this painting portrays a black-hulled freighter being escorted by a reddish-brown tugboat from the docks into the East River. To the right, a barge crosses the river and although details of the port are blurred by smoke and steam, one can still discern the outlines of several ships still in port. This painting, created by Carlton T. Chapman, serves a duel purpose by acting as a reminder of both the inevitability of change and the persistence of timeless underlying elements. For example, even though the East River view of the Manhattan architectural landscape has changed dramatically since the creation of this painting, the portrayal of freighters and ships as dependable vessels of commerce seems to have remained a constant in the average New York workday.
