This is a small copy of Stuart's large, full-length portrait of Washington, the original of which was painted for the Marquis of Landsdowne in 1796. Stuart made several replicas of it, and it was engraved numerous times throughout the 19th century. The Society's watercolor probably dates from the early 20th century and may have been taken from an engraving.
