The subject was born in Boston, the son of John Ellerton and Anna (Cabot) Lodge. He launched his political career by being elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1879, and in 1886 to the U.S. Congress. After serving in the House for six years he was elected to the U.S. Senate where he served from 1893 to 1924.
