White blouse printed all over with blue H's accented with blue and green stripes; signature of Hubert H. Humphrey printed at waist within green stripe. Blouse has five button closure at front, single button cuffs, and tie at neck.
This campaign blouse, printed all over with the initials of presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey (1911-1978), was given to Karolyn Gould, managing director of the New York State campaign for Humphrey-Muskie during the last seven weeks of the campaign. The upbeat graphic and vivid colors of the blouse-and other Humphrey campaign items-belie the bitterness and divisiveness of the 1968 presidential campaign. The key issue in 1968, a tumultuous year in American history, was the escalating U.S. engagement in the war in Vietnam. Democrat Hubert Humphrey pledged to continue Lyndon Johnson's war policies in Vietnam, leaving the antiwar "doves" without a viable candidate in either party.
Gift of Karolyn R. Gould
