Bronze struck medal with obverse showing clothed male bust facing three-quarters to left; legend: "MEMORIAL/JAMES JEROME HILL." Reverse contains inscription within oak wreath: "SEPTEMBER 16TH/1838/MAY 29TH/1916/'ONE OF THE/WORLD'S GREATEST/BUILDERS.' "

James Jerome Hill (1938-1916) was an American railway promoter and financier. He established the Great Northern Railway Company and played an important part in organization and funding of the Canadian Pacific Railway. His many operations in the stock market, mining, and banking led him to become known as the Empire Builder.
