Joseph Barrow Louis was the full legal name of this former world's heavyweight boxing champion. He was born near Lafayette, Alabama, and grew up in Detroit after the death of his father, a sharecropper. He defeated James J. Braddock in Chicago in 1937 to win the heavyweight crown, a title he held for twelve years.
