Born in Cornwall, England, Laurance came to America in 1767 and five years later was admitted to the bar. In 1775 he was commissioned in the First New York Regiment and two years later was appointed judge advocate general on the staff of General George Washington. After the war he served successively as New York state senator, New York's representative to the first U.S. Congress, and from 1796 to 1800 as U.S. senator from New York. This portrait was a gift to the Society from his grandson.
