The study was attributed to Thomas Cole until 1973 as a result of its entry as a work by Cole in the Society's accession record when acquired in 1907 from Durand's daughter, Mrs. Lucy Maria Durand Woodman. This painting is a copy by Durand from the original painting by Nicholas Lancret in the National Gallery in London.
