Gilt bronze struck medal with obverse showing clothed bust of Root with surrounding legend: "ELIHU ROOT, SECRETARIO DE ESTADO DE LOS EE. UU. DE AMERICA." Reverse depicts seal of Peru at top right with palm and laurel branch, surmounted by wreath; inscription at left: "RECUERDO/DE SU/VISITA/AL PERU/SEPTEMBRE DE/1906."

Elihu Root (1845-1937) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. He served as Secretary of War under McKinley and Roosevelt (1899-1903) and as Secretary of State under Roosevelt (1905-1909). From 1909- 1915 he was a Republican Senator from New York. This medal was issued in remembrance of Root's visit to Peru during his unprecedented diplomatic tour of South America in 1906.
