Description 
Metal artillery shell mounted on a circular silver plate base with two foliate silver plate bands applied around the top and bottom and two applied scroll handles at each side; shell engraved, "Dec. 16, 1908/ PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT/ led 16 Battle Ships out of/ Hampton Roads for a cruise/ around the world. After sailing/ over 42000 miles they were/ recieved back to Hampton roads/ by the President/ and thousands of people/ Feb. 22, 1909/ THYI SHELL/ was one used in saluting President/ Roosevelt after he had reviewed/ and inspected the ships as he/ left for Washington" in block letters; maker's marks stamped on the base; engraving on base scratched off.
