Hester Leisler was the daughter of insurrectionist Jacob Leisler (1640-91) and his wife, Elsje Tymens. Through her mother she was related to the leading Dutch families of the Hudson Valley, including the Bayards and the Van Cortlandts. She married Barent Rynders, Jr., a New York merchant, in 1696. This portrait, by an unidentified artist, is similar in style to portraits by Evert Duyckinck, III (ca. 1677-1727).
